Crop to Cup - Di Bella Coffee buying direct philosophy...
At Di Bella Coffee we believe that we must contribute to the development of our coffee growers, which is definitely our industry’s best resource. If we can help in any way to offer a better quality of life to the women, men and children in our plantations, we will contribute to the future of the nations that grow coffee.
Labour cost among our growers is one of the highest in the coffee regions. We promote this condition and other measures that represent positive changes and give an example to other coffee producers of the world. We are willing to share initiatives for the common good.
Therefore, we focus on the following aspects: The farmers that deal with DiBella provide scholarship assistance for the workers’ children & give financial support to cover healthcare plans for the members of their staff and their families, which includes vaccination, nutritional plans, family planning, prenatal care and dental care.
Besides, we work hard in the hope that our coffee business sets a good example to the coffee growing nation’s productive industry, and thus, encourages buyers and consumers to get to know us better.
We eradicate Child Labour
Our coffee workers move to the coffee ranches with their wives & children. In the farms that we buy coffee from, children do not work: during the harvest season while their parents work, children receive education; they play games and build mutually respectful relations with the area non-indigenous community.
Our farmers programme for child labour eradication encompasses education, nutrition, health care, recreation and cultural exchange. The programme is carried out during the harvest season (from November to February) and includes every son or daughter of our staff members aged 4 to 14.
Showing respect and giving education to the children is the main priority for our coffee farmers. Children should receive all-round education; learn about courtesy, civic and moral values. To achieve this aim, our coffee growers made an alliance with local non-governmental organizations that promotes child labour eradication and also works to ensure that all indigenous children receive education at schools that also function as day-care centres while their parents work.
As a result of this experience, and motivated by a genuine desire to achieve positive changes in our farmer’s future, they have built an Education Centre. The farmers that sell coffee to DiBella cover the operating costs such as food, educational material, daily transport services from and to the education centre, and even the teachers’ homes are included.
For the purposes of efficiency and reliability these local organizations aided by UNICEF and International Labour Organization (ILO), assesses the students’ experiences and knowledge acquired at the end of each period. Afterwards, the farmers that sell coffee to DiBella implement the recommendations for the next period, thus, following up the education process.
In summary, at Di Bella Coffee we ensure that our strong relationship with the coffee plantations and our direct buying philosophy benefits all parties. The farmers are paid premium prices for a premium product….and we receive premium estate coffee for many years to come. Our direct relationship also allows us to guarantee our company philosophy of “the ultimate coffee experience…” via adopting a ‘crop to cup’ mentality. There are many “fair trade” schemes around the world doing some great work for grower. However for the estate plantations our system has always proven to deliver a higher price direct to the farmer…. in many cases as much as $1.20 per kilogram. Thus enabling the farmer to have the finances to achieve a better quality of life….. and of course more sustainable farming.
